In the Wobrécken district of Esch-sur-Alzette, between Grande-Duchesse Charlotte and Winston-Churchill boulevards, the Generatiounscampus Wobrécken opened in May 2024: a campus with a primary school for around 300 to 360 pupils, a maison relais (after-school care), a nursery for 40 toddlers, a sports hall and a care centre with 130 rooms for the elderly care organisation Elysis. The building is constructed in timber and designed to passive house principles.
To make way for the development, between 150 and 200 trees already on the site had to be removed. At the time, the municipality of Esch-sur-Alzette announced that it would compensate for the loss with new planting along Grande-Duchesse Charlotte boulevard, as part of the site’s redevelopment.
Van den Berk Boomkwekerijen supplied 53 trees in three species for this replanting. Amelanchier arborea 'Robin Hill' (serviceberry), 11 specimens at 20-25 standard: a small tree with white-pink blossom in spring and orange-red autumn colour. Acer campestre 'Elsrijk' (field maple), 7 specimens at 20-25 and 24 specimens at 35-40 standard: a compact, narrow-crowned tree that tolerates paving and urban conditions well. Gleditsia triacanthos 'Sunburst' (golden honey locust), 11 specimens at 35-40 standard: a thornless cultivar with a light, open crown and golden-yellow spring foliage. In addition to Van den Berk, the nursery Ebben supplied part of the smaller shrubs and sizes for the project.
