Tilburg city centre has undergone a major transformation in recent years. Where there was once a hard-surfaced inner city with little greenery, the Stadsforum and the surrounding city centre have been redesigned with mature trees and climate-resilient planting. Van den Berk Boomkwekerijen supplied trees for Willemsplein, Stadhuisplein and various other locations in the city centre. In addition to supplying the trees, we also advised on species selection and the design of the planting pits.
At Willemsplein, the planting includes Pinus sylvestris, Zelkova serrata 'Green Vase', Styphnolobium japonicum 'Regent' and Quercus robur. These species were chosen for their heat tolerance and their ability to perform well in an intensively used city centre with extensive paving.
At other locations in the city centre, additional species have been used, such as Tilia, Sorbus 'Dodong', Cornus mas, Robinia and Acer saccharinum. The mix creates varied urban greenery that will remain climate-resilient in the long term and helps reduce heat stress and improve water infiltration.
