The revitalization of the Svratka River embankment in Brno has transformed a previously difficult-to-access area into a new natural and recreational space that connects the river with the city and offers places for walking, relaxation and cycling. The revitalized section connects to Rullerovo Embankment, named after architect Ivan Ruller, whose team was involved in designing this part of the embankment. The revitalized area extends for several kilometres along the Svratka River, connecting different parts of the city with the river. The project includes nature-based flood protection measures, widening and reshaping of the river channel, new paths, recreational areas and extensive planting. Mature trees are an important part of the new embankment, planted with trunk circumferences of 50–60 cm. The main species include swamp oak Quercus palustris and small-leaved lime Tilia cordata, complemented by other tree species. The larger tree sizes helped create an attractive environment soon after completion. The project combines flood protection with the long-term transformation of the river embankment into a high-quality public space with a significant proportion of greenery. Photo: BRNOmycity.
