The redesign of Place de la République in Paris was completed in 2013. The project was led by the architecture practice TVK, in collaboration with AREAL and Martha Schwartz Partners. The aim was to transform the square from a busy traffic area into an open, pedestrian-friendly urban space.


A key element was the restoration of the historic tree structure, with particular attention to urban greenery. A total of 150 plane trees were planted to improve biodiversity and the microclimate; the trees were supplied by Van den Berk Boomkwekerijen. AREAL designed the landscape plan with a clear, restrained structure. The design combines historic value with modern urban functionality.

The new layout makes the square suitable for gatherings, relaxation and urban life. Place de la République is now an example of sustainable, inclusive urban redevelopment.
