Platanus x hispanica TREEVOLUTION® ‘Woodside Column’PBR

This plane tree was selected from seeds dating from 1995. In 2002, Mr H. van Rijsewijk chose a number of trees from this batch, based on their regular, vertical crown shapes, and took cuttings from them. ‘Woodside Column’ emerged as the best of the selection and was registered in 2014. This tree has a columnar crown and intricate branches. These intricate, regular branches produce a relatively dense, regular crown structure. Due to its compact growth, ‘Woodside Column’ remains rather smaller than ordinary plane tree trees. Its other features are the same as those of the species.

Drought-resistant avenue trees

Plane trees are good city trees, since they are strong and can withstand drought. They can also thrive in pavements, but the surface roots may push the paving upwards over time. Preparing a good planting site can prevent this. Plane trees tolerate pruning very well and can even be pruned back to the old wood. Sometimes you see that plane trees have become too big for their planting site are pruned in ‘candelabra’ style. This generally produces acceptable results. ‘Woodside Column’ is good at withstanding wind and, thanks to its uniform columnar crown shape, it is a good avenue tree that can also cope with long periods of drought.
