Thuja plicata 'Atrovirens' Thuja plicata 'Atrovirens'

Cupressaceae

Thuja plicata 'Atrovirens' Thuja plicata 'Atrovirens'

Narrow, upright growing and densely branched tree which remains more slender than the species. The crown is initially narrow pyramidal and later narrow conical. Normally the tree grows to around 20 m tall with a width of about 4 m, but after many years it can become much taller. The bark is reddish brown, fibrous and flaky. The young twigs are green first, later turning reddish brown. Like the species, the lower branches can take root when they touch the ground and, seemingly form new trees. The scaly foliage is arranged in shingle form and glossy very dark green, in winter too. When crushed the foliage gives off a characteristically pleasant fragrance. The blossom and the oval cones which follow are inconspicuous. ‘Altovirens’ can tolerate pruning and is therefore a good hedge plant. The glossy, dark green foliage can form an excellent background for colourful borders.
Our trees can only be planted when they don't have any leaves. Due to the this we will start delivering again from November 2025.
