Staphylea trifolia Staphylea trifolia

Staphylea trifolia is a large, multi-stemmed shrub, rarely a small tree, up to about 5 m high. The species grows distinctly upright and is quite narrow when young. Later, it widens and will develop a vase-shaped crown. The annual branches are yellow-green and initially hairy. The pale green leaf buds are always slightly angled upwards. The leaves are always trifoliate, with the top leaf having a remarkably long stalk. The upper side of the leaves is dark green, the underside is lighter and slightly downy-hairy. In May, the flowers open in nodding clusters. The individual flowers are greenish-white with pale green calyxes. The colour impression is greenish-white to cream. The flowers are followed by the typically inflated fruits characteristic of any Staphylea. In S. trifolia, they are 3-lobed and 3-4 cm long.
Staphylea trifolia grows naturally on moist riverbanks. It is a strong shrub that will grow well on any nutritious, sufficiently moist but permeable soil. It is a typical warm-season shrub that should preferably be planted in a sunny location.
