Rosaceae

Sorbus 'Astrid' Sorbus 'Astrid'

Small tree with a pyramidal crown, approx. 4 to 5 m tall, 3 to 3.5 m diameter. On older trees the lower branches spread more or less horizontally. The imparipinnate leaves consist of 11 - 19 leaf segments. They have a finely serrated margin and are matt grey-green. In May and June the white flowers appear in wide corymbs. They are followed by the familiar rowan berries. Initially the fruits are matt brownish-red but turn apricot-coloured when ripe. They remain on the tree until into winter, provided they are not eaten by birds. Healthy tree that was developed in Swedish research programme. The seed from which ‘Astrid’ was produced was collected in Uppsala botanical garden, Sweden. Its small size makes it suitable for streets and gardens.
