Fast growing conifer with a narrow pyramidal crown, up to 30 m, even higher in the right conditions. The striking, orange-yellow bark is soft and fibrous and peels off in long strips. The horizontally attached twigs are in whorls. The needles are spirally arranged along the twigs and are pressed against the twig at their base. They are blue-green and have two stomatal stripes on the underside. In winter their colour becomes more intense and more blue than green. The narrow oval cones are brown and relatively inconspicuous. When mature, ‘Winter Blue’ is more densely branched than the species. The slender crown of this large tree means it can also be used in wide borders. Prefers to grow on a well-drained, sandy loam soil. Good wind tolerance. Can also tolerate sea wind but not drying wind. When young this tree needs protection against severe frost.
