Fagaceae

Quercus palustris 'Swamp Pygmy' Quercus palustris 'Swamp Pygmy'

Slow growing spherical selection with a fairly open growth habit. Depending on the graft height the tree grows to around 6 m. The young twigs are olive green and the older bark and branches are grey. The bark is smooth to shallow grooved. The ovate to broad elliptical leaf is lobed to around halfway along the leaf blade. Like the species, the leaf is somewhat varied, there being shallow-lobed and very deeply lobed leaves. In summer the leaf is glossy green, turning a lovely green-yellow to deep red in autumn. Its compact, irregular, picturesque growth habit makes it very suitable for use in narrow streets, in residential areas and squares. Grows in any soil that is not too limy and can also cope with wet soil. Can tolerate air pollution.
