Pseudotsuga menziesii var. glauca Pseudotsuga menziesii var. glauca

This natural variety is more common in the interior of North America than the species Pseudotsuga menziesii. Pseudotsuga menziesii var. glauca occurs in the central part of the Rocky Mountains, from Alberta and British Columbia, Canada to New Mexico, USA in the south. The variety glauca remains slightly smaller, has a slightly narrower crown and has slightly shorter and thicker needles, up to about 3 cm long. The cones are also slightly smaller. Most striking feature is that the needles are significantly bluer in colour than the dark green needles of Pseudotsuga menziesii. Several named cultivars with blue-green and blue needles evolved from the variety glauca. The narrower crown shape combined with the characteristics of Pseudotsuga menziesii, both in terms of soil requirements and applicability, make this tree versatile in use. Grows on all types of soil. Very suitable for use as a solitary tree or in small groups in parks and (large) gardens. Hardiness zone: 5a
