Populus simonii is a fairly small tree with a narrow columnar shape in its younger years: later it becomes broad to rounded. The crown is formed by many multi-branched and fairly thin twigs. Height approx. 12 - 15 m. The obovate leaves are dark green and have a grey-green to greyish-white underside. The autumn colour is yellowish-green to green. Can be used as a solitary or as an avenue or street tree. Sensitive to leaf spot disease, very sensitive to bacterial canker. Prefers moist nutritious soils, not too heavy. Winter hardiness zone: 4
