Picea pungens 'Erich Frahm' Picea pungens 'Erich Frahm'

'Erich Frahm' is a broad pyramidal tree with a dense, very regular branching and crown. It grows 10 - 15 m high, with a width of just over 5 m. This cultivar already forms a continuous central branch from its juvenile stage, reinforcing its regular shape. Stem and main branches greyish brown to blackish grey, young twigs light reddish brown. The needles are stiff and sharply pointed. They are conspicuously blue-grey. Cones quite large, yellow-green at first, light brown to yellow-brown when maturing. Like other cultivars of Picea pungens, it does not have many soil requirements and prefers full sun. 'Erich Frahm' was introduced in 1950 by the former German nursery J. Timm & Co. Erich Frahm was co-owner of this nursery, which was located where the Arboretum Ellerhoop-Thiensen is now. Hardiness zone: 4
