Moraceae

Morus nigra 'Dr Monbalieu' Morus nigra 'Dr Monbalieu'

'Dr Monbalieu' is a small tree with a somewhat erratic, round crown up to about 5 m high. The bark is brown and attractively rough-grooved in later life. The mid-green leaves are broadly ovate to heart-shaped. They are up to over 12 cm in size and do not or hardly discolour in autumn. The inconspicuous flower catkins appear around May-June. These hang hidden among the leaves and are creamy green. They are followed by edible fruits (mulberries) that are initially red, but then turn black. The fruits are about 4 cm in size. 'Dr Monbalieu' prefers to grow in moist, well-drained soil, preferably calcareous. Despite its moisture requirements, the tree tolerates a lot of heat and dry soil. Suitable for planting in a sheltered location in small-scale applications such as parks, squares and (private) gardens. Hardiness zone 6b.
