Mespilus germanica 'Macrocarpa' Mespilus germanica 'Macrocarpa'

Mespilus germanica 'Macrocarpa' does not differ much from the species M. germanica, but differs from it mainly in that the fruits are larger. 'Macrocarpa' is a slow-growing tree that eventually reaches 4-6 (8) m in height. The crown is flattened spherical and somewhat irregular in shape. This erratic crown shape gives the tree a somewhat informal character. The old bark is grey. The inverted ovoid to oblong, dark green leaves are hairy. In autumn, the dark green leaves turn dark yellow to orange-yellow. White flowers, up to 5 cm in size, open in May. They are followed by up to 6 cm large edible fruits, called medlars. These are slightly more flattened at the top than in M. germanica. 'Macrophylla' usually produces many fruits. Hardiness zone 5b.
