Rosaceae

Mespilus germanica 'Bredase Reus' Mespilus germanica 'Bredase Reus'

Grows slightly more vigorously than the species, small tree with heavy main branches and irregular, flat-topped, spherical crown to approx. 6 m tall. The elongated to obovate leaf is very finely serrated with soft hairs, especially when young. In autumn it turns reddish brown to deep golden yellow. The matt brown, hard fruits have strikingly large calyx valves and are only edible when rotting. Often after the first night frost. Annually, ‘Bredase Reus’ bears a lot of fruits which are larger than the species. In around 1934 the original tree stood in the Breda Trial Garden, but the plant has been distributed since ca. 1950. Deep rooting tree. Tolerates limy soils, is very hardy and heat resistant.
Our trees can only be planted when they don't have any leaves. Due to the this we will start delivering again from November 2025.
