Malus tschonoskii 'Belmonte' Malus tschonoskii 'Belmonte'

Medium-size tree with a broad pyramidal, eventually almost round crown, to about 12 m. The young twigs are reddish with dense, silver grey hair. The older bark is grey-brown and smooth. Only in older trees do thin plates of bark flake off at the base of the trunk. The leaf is ovate-elliptical, bluish green on top and woolly on the underside. It turns purple to orange in autumn. The white flowers open out of pink tinted buds in around mid-May. These are single and approx. 3.5 - 4 cm. The beautiful fruits are up to 3 cm and yellow-brown with red dots. They remain on the tree into October. In 1996 the NAKB (Netherlands Inspection Service for Horticulture) named a clone that was already present in Dutch nurseries and whose original tree stands in the Arboretum Belmonte at Wageningen. Slightly susceptible to scab.
