Malus prunifolia 'Fastigiata' Malus prunifolia 'Fastigiata'

The crown of Malus prunifolia 'Fastigiata' is columnar when young, after a few years the crown widens and eventually becomes semi-open, broadly vase-shaped to fan-shaped. The tree grows about 5-7 m tall. In April, the pinkish-white flowers open, blushing white. The flower buds are slightly reddened. The flowers are single and about 5 cm in size. They are followed by many, circa 2 cm large round ornamental apples. These are yellow with a red blush. The weight of the many fruits causes the branches to bend, which will widen the crown. M. prunifolia 'Fastigiata' flowers very abundantly, but has alternate years, so that flowering and fruiting are not equally abundant every year. The tree will grow in almost any soil, provided it is well-drained. Tolerates wind, but not sea wind.
The exact origin of 'Fastigiata' is not known, the tree first appearing in 1906 in a nursery of the USDA, the US Department of Agriculture. The tree is extremely hardy, hardiness zone 3.
