Malus magdeburgensis Malus magdeburgensis

Malus ×magdeburgensis is a small to medium-sized Crabapple with a semi-open, broadly vase-shaped to narrowly fan-shaped crown. The tree grows about 6-8 m tall and about the same width. The red buds appear in April, from which purple-pink flowers open in May. The flowers are usually semi-filled with 7-15 petals and about 4 cm in size. M. ×magdeburgensis flowers very profusely every year. Flowering is followed by about 3 cm large ornamental apples. These are light green to greenish yellow with a red blush. The fruits are less conspicuous than the flowering and it is primarily a tree that should be planted for the blossom. Malus ×magdeburgensis is healthy tree and only slightly susceptible to scab. The tree is virtually soil tolerant, provided it is sufficiently permeable and sufficiently nutritious. Tolerates wind, but not sea wind. Can also be used in paving.
Malus ×magdeburgensis is a hybrid between Malus spectabilis and M. pumila, which originated in Germany around 1850. Hardiness zone 5.
