Small tree with a broad ovoid crown, up to about 6 m. The young shoots are red and bear bronze-coloured young leaves. The oval to elliptical leaf turns dark green in summer. The semi-double, 5 to 6 cm flowers open in May. They consist of 10 to 15 petals which are followed by quite small crab apples.
