Malus domestica 'Roter Berlepsch' Malus domestica 'Roter Berlepsch'

'Roter Berlepsch' is a moderately growing small to medium-sized tree with a semi-open, broad to round crown that can reach 6-8 m in height. Around mid-April-early May, pink flowers open from dark pink buds. Apples can be picked from late September to late October. The apples of 'Rote Berlepsch' are fairly large and slightly flattened round in shape. The colour is yellow-green with a large deep red blush and stripes. The juicy flesh is firm and creamy white. It smells and tastes pleasantly fresh and sour. 'Rote Berlepsch' can be used as a hand apple, but it is also an excellent apple for making juice or purée or for use in pastries.
'Rote Berlepsch' was found after 1880 in Grevenbroich, Germany, as a mutant in 'Berlepsch', the older, more green variety. Hardiness zone 6.
