'Reine des Reinettes' is a medium-sized apple tree that grows moderately fast. The oval crown is semi-open and the tree will grow (5)6-8 m tall. The flower buds are pink and the flowers, which open in April, are whitish-pink. The apples ripen late in the season, they can be picked around late September-early October. They are medium-sized, round and regular in shape. The colour is orange-yellow to golden yellow with an orange-red blush on the sunny side. The flesh is firm, creamy white, medium juicy and pleasantly acidic aromatic. 'King of the Pippins' can be used as a hand apple and as a cooking apple, e.g. for apple pie. Also suitable for making cider. Good for use in private gardens.
'King of the Pippins' is also known as 'King of the Pippins'. It is unclear whether this cultivar originated in England or France. What is certain is that this old cultivar was imported into Germany from England around 1800. Hardiness zone 6.
