Grows from a large shrub into a broad, ovoid, small to medium size tree with a height of about 5 - 8 m. The flowers have the characteristic vase-shaped tulip shape of the Magnolia. They are 10 - 20 cm in size. The 6 - 8 petals are purplish red to light pinkish red with a darker base on the outside. The inside is whitish pink to white. Usually blossoms in early May. A second, less profuse blossoming often follows in August. Was named in China and imported to Europe from there. Suitable for use in parks and gardens.
