Large, strongly branching tree with a sturdy, vertical, smooth trunk. Normally up to 20-25 m high, in some cases even up to 40 m. The crown is wide vase-shaped. The palmately lobed leaf has 3 to 5 lobes and the leaf underside is hairy. Inconspicuous flowers in April. The spiky brown capsules hang from long stems of about 3 cm. The dark green leaf turns dark red to deep purple in autumn. This Liquidambar has no corky fissures. Suitable for parks. Prefers moist soil, but should be planted in a sheltered location due to sensitivity to frost and wind.
