Hamamelidaceae

Hamamelis virginiana Hamamelis virginiana

Hamamelis virginiana is a very sturdy shrub to small tree with an open structure formed by a number of main branches growing upward at an angle from the base. The crown is irregularly broad vase-shaped to round. Usually the tree grows about 5 m high, but under good conditions it can reach 8 m or even higher. The twigs are greenish brown and softly hairy, the older bark is grey to greyish brown and always smooth. The hefty inverted ovoid leaves are mid-green with a slightly wavy leaf edge. In autumn, they turn a beautiful golden yellow. The odourless flowers appear in compact clusters in the leaf axils. They consist of four very narrow, yellow petals that are slightly twisted. Unlike other witch-hazels, Hamamelis virginiana flowers in autumn. Since both the autumn colour and the flowers are yellow, the flowers are not very conspicuous among the discoloured foliage. For growers, this species is interesting because young seedlings are used to graft on the different cultivars of Hamamelis ×intermedia. For the user, it is mainly the beautiful yellow autumn colour that makes this species attractive. The tree likes slightly acidic to slightly basic, moist but sufficiently permeable soil. Moderately wind resistant, but suitable for use in light shade.
Our trees can only be planted when they don't have any leaves. Due to the this we will start delivering again from November 2025.
