Hamamelis ×intermedia Hamamelis ×intermedia

Hamamelidaceae

Hamamelis ×intermedia Hamamelis ×intermedia

Large, broad shrub up to 4 m tall, with dense, rather tangled branches. The brown bark remains smooth even when mature. The leaves of young plants can measure up to 20 cm. The flowers grow in compact clusters of axillary racemes. The individual flowers grow to over 4 cm, varying in colour from light yellow to purplish red, depending on the cultivar. H. x intermedia originated from a cross of H. mollis and H. japonica. This hybrid was generated independently at various places in the world. Alfred Rehder described the hybrid first, based on a plant in the Arnold Arboretum in the USA. There are many cultivars under cultivation. The hybrid, H. x intermedia, is not grown as such.
