Curious, small tree with a very loose branch pattern and an open, irregular ovoid crown. The relatively thin, thornless twigs are reddish brown. The mature bark is grey and smooth. The leaves are pinnate as in other Gleditsia, but because the leaf stem is curled, the leaves appear to be grouped in clusters. Because the leaves always grow in groups along the twigs, this effect is reinforced, giving the tree its curious appearance. That is why this strange tree is called ‘Goofy’. The leaves are shiny green, turning slightly yellow in autumn. Has few flowers or none at all, so does not produce any fruit either. Due to the striking shape, only suitable for parks and gardens. Tolerates paving and is moderately sensitive to wind.
