Fagus sylvatica 'Swat Magret' Fagus sylvatica 'Swat Magret'

'Swat Magret' is a large tree with a broad oval to round crown that can reach an ultimate height of 25 m or more. The bark is smooth and grey in colour. The oval to ovoid leaves sprout deep red and turn intense brownish red to blackish red during summer. 'Swat Magret' was selected in 1895 by G. Frahm, Elmshorn, Germany, because of its, compared to other red beeches, very large leaves and very dark leaf colour. At 10-13 cm long, the leaves are indeed somewhat larger than usual. The leaf edges are remarkably wavy. Suitable for use as avenue and park tree, but also as a hedge plant. Thrives best in well-drained, not too wet, humus-rich soils. Moderately wind resistant. Hardiness zone: 5b
