Fagaceae

Fagus sylvatica 'Spaethiana' Fagus sylvatica 'Spaethiana'

Rather slow grower with a crown that stays narrower than the species. Height circa 15 m, maximum 20 m. The soft bark is grey and fairly thin. The shiny, ovate leaves are slightly smaller than of the species and they are deep red-brown to nearly black. The veins are slightly lighter tinted. This colour is retained well into autumn. It is one of the nicest dark-leaved beeches. 'Spaethiana' comes out best as a park tree. Prefers calcareous, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil that is high in humus content. The tree is intolerant to hard surfaces and a high water table. Moderate wind resistance. Winter hardiness zone: 5b
Our trees can only be planted when they don't have any leaves. Due to the this we will start delivering again from November 2025.
