Fagus sylvatica 'Horizontalis' has horizontally spreading branches which causes the tree to remain clearly lower than the species. Height 6 m at a maximum. As a tree the 'Horizontalis' is usually grafted on a rootstock at 2.2 m. The leaf is similar to the species. The leaf margin is distinctively undulating. The tree blooms with small, inconspicuous flower catkins. These are followed by small nuts. 'Horizontalis' is not very common and is mostly used as a small solitary tree. Prefers soil that is not too wet, well-drained and rich in humus content. Moderate wind resistance. Winter hardiness zone: 5b
