Euonymus phellomanus Euonymus phellomanus

Euonymus phellomanus is a densely branched, medium-sized shrub 2-5 m tall, in some cases growing into a small tree with a rounded crown. The annual twigs are green and have four broad, brown, corky ridges that can be up to 1 cm wide. On older twigs, these cork strips usually turn green due to algae growth. The old bark is deeply grooved. The ovoid to elliptical leaves are dark green and barely colour in autumn. After the inconspicuous flowering in May, the characteristically shaped box fruits appear around August. These are dark pink to red and when they open when ripe, seeds surrounded by a red membrane (called arillus) become visible.
E. phellomanus Most similar to E. alatus but differs in that the leaves of E. alatus are smaller with shorter petioles and usually turn deep red in autumn. Also, the leaves of E. alatus have 7-9 pairs of veins, while the leaf of E. phellomanus has 10-15 pairs of veins.
Can grow in all soils and tolerates both sun and shade. E. phellomanus is, however, sensitive to stagnant water around the root system. To keep the corky leaves at their best, it is best to prune the plant every year so that young twigs are formed.
