Large columnar to narrowly pyramidal conifer with dense branching, easily growing to a tree 15 to 30 m tall. The bark is reddish-brown and detaches into long, fibrous sheets later in life. The young twigs are green-yellow at first, later light red-brown. The foliage is dull mid-green. The tree grows in all soils, if well-drained and sufficiently moist, and also tolerates a lot of wind. Alongside various cultivars of Chamaecyparis lawsoniana and Thuja, it is among the most popular hedge plants. Its naturally narrow habit is an advantage when used as a hedge, and in addition, the tree prunes very well. Because of its vigorous growth, it should be pruned twice a year, creating a very dense hedge. The tree originated in 1888 from a cross between Chamaecyparis nootkatensis and Cupressus macrocarpa.

Grote zuilvormige tot smal piramidale conifeer met een dichte vertakking, die gemakkelijk kan uitgroeien tot een boom van 15 tot 30 m hoogte. De bast is roodbruin en laat op latere leeftijd los in lange, vezelachtige platen. De jonge twijgen zijn eerst groengeel, later licht roodbruin. Het loof is dof middengroen. De boom groeit op alle gronden, mits goed doorlatend en voldoende vochtig, en verdraagt ook veel wind. Ze behoort, naast verschillende cultivars van Chamaecyparis lawsoniana en Thuja, tot de meest populaire haagplanten. De van nature smalle habitus is een voordeel bij het gebruik als haag en daarbij is de boom zeer goed te snoeien. Vanwege de krachtige groei moet er twee keer per jaar worden gesnoeid en dan ontstaat een zeer dichte haag. De boom ontstond in 1888 uit een kruising tussen Chamaecyparis nootkatensis en Cupressus macrocarpa.
