Cornus 'Ascona' Cornus 'Ascona'

Cornaceae

Cornus 'Ascona' Cornus 'Ascona'

Small tree up to 8 m with a round crown and pendulous branches. The young twigs are purple to brown: older branches have grey, somewhat peeling bark. The large, glossy, dark green leaves produce splendid red to purple autumn colours. The flower panicle has a diameter of 6 to 10 cm. Each flower head is surrounded by 4 large, rather rounded bracts. The bracts are white and slightly grooved: the tips are somewhat folded back. ‘Ascona’ is a hybrid of C. florida and C. nuttallii, and most resembles C. nuttallii. However, the tree is sterile and more healthy.
