Castanea sativa 'Pyramidalis' Castanea sativa 'Pyramidalis'

Castanea sativa 'Pyramidalis'. A tree up to 30 m tall that is clearly distinguished from the species by its persistently narrower crown. The crown is pyramidal to conical. The heavy, squat, dark grey trunk twists on its axis taking the deep grooves in the bark with it. Young branches are olive-green but quickly turn reddish-brown. The elongated leaf is dark green and glossy and has a serrated edge. The flowers and fruit are the same as those of the species. But the tree flowers some weeks earlier than does the species. Winter hardiness zone: 6a
