Amelanchier spicata Garden shadblow

Varies from low shrub to small tree, with narrow ovoid to ovoid crown. Leaves are initially hairy on the underside, later hairless. In summer matt dark green, turning in autumn to yellow and brownish red. Around mid-April, the small flowers open in short, erect racemes. The individual flowers are greenish white, white or a very light pink. They are followed by purplish-black fruits that are not very big but are juicy and edible. It is a richly blossoming species with a good, dense habit. Amelanchier has few soil requirements but grows best in calcareous soil.
