Rosaceae

Amelanchier asiatica var. sinica Amelanchier asiatica var. sinica

Grows from a large shrub into an elegant, medium-size tree up to about 10 m high. The somewhat irregular crown has a broad fan shape and is loosely structured. The young twigs are thin and gracefully overhanging. The leaf is dark green in summer, turning orange-red in autumn. It is somewhat smaller than typical for the species. Blossoms profusely from around the end of April until mid-May with fairly large, greenish white flowers grouped in overhanging racemes. The tree does not usually bear many fruits. These are blue-black and relatively small. This Chinese variety of A. asiatica differs from the species in having a looser growth pattern with more overhanging twigs and smaller, narrower leaves that are hairless shortly after emerging. Has few soil requirements but grows best in calcareous soil.
