Betulaceae

Alnus glutinosa 'Aurea' Alnus glutinosa 'Aurea'

A medium-sized tree with a height up to 12 m, which makes it smaller than the species. The young twigs are the same as the species. The ovate leaf becomes up to 8 cm and has a blunt tip. In spring it is bright yellow, but turns to very light green in mid-summer and persists long on the tree in autumn. Buds and the young leaf feel sticky (glutinosa = sticky). Female catkins are oval and inconspicuous, ± 0.5 cm long, and male catkins are brown yellow, ± 7 cm long. The strobiles appear from September and persist long. The tree roots deep but withstands hard surfaces poorly. Wind resistant. Winter hardiness zone: 3
