Viburnum ×burkwoodii is a medium-sized shrub with a round crown that grows 2-3 m high and wide. The young twigs have a rough feel due to the stiff, short hairs. The older bark is grey-brown and smooth. The leaves are a glossy dark green, giving the plant a healthy appearance. V. ×burkwoodii is semi-evergreen and the leaves that fall off in winter turn deep red in autumn. In March-April the spherical corymbs appear with about 1 cm large, white flowers. The flower buds are brownish-pink to dark pink and contrast beautifully with the opened white flowers. The flowers have a very strong and pleasant fragrance. They are followed by small, elongated berry-shaped fruits that colour through red to black.
V. ×burkwoodii grows in any soil, provided it is sufficiently nutritious and sufficiently permeable. The shrub is fine for use in parks and gardens, either as a solitary or in large planting beds. V. ×burkwoodii can also be used in greenbelts and as an understory under trees with transparent crowns.
V. ×burkwoodii arose from a cross between the evergreen V. utile and the deciduous V. carlesii. There are several fine cultivars in cultivation.
