Adoxaceae

Viburnum ×bodnantense 'Dawn' Viburnum ×bodnantense 'Dawn'

'Dawn' is a large shrub with steeply rising stem branches up to about 3 m high. Initially the shrub grows up slenderly, but in later life 'Dawn' widens and eventually the plant will develop an almost round crown. The grey-brown bark flakes off slightly. The leaves are ovate-lanceolate to inverted ovate-lanceolate. They are slightly glossy dark green with purplish-red petioles. This plant starts flowering in late November and the main flowering period usually falls in February and early March, depending on any frosts. The flowers are pink, later fading somewhat to pinkish white. The buds are a striking dark pink colour.
A hybrid between the winter-flowering species V. grandiflorum and V. farreri was created in 1933 at the botanical garden in Edinburgh, Scotland. The Scottish hybrid was not initially named. Two years later, the same hybrid was repeated at the Bodnant Garden in North Wales, but in here V. farreri was used as the mother plant. The hybrid that emerged in Wales was named after the garden: V. ×bodnantense. The best seedling was named and named 'Dawn'. The older Scottish hybrid was later named after the assistant curator of the botanical garden in Edinburgh, 'Charles Lamont'. Hardiness zone 6b.
Our trees can only be planted when they don't have any leaves. Due to the this we will start delivering again from November 2025.
