Remarkably slim columnar crown, fairly open. The dark green leaves emerge quite late and are relatively small. 'Columella' is a good grower, but is slower than 'Belgica' and 'Dodoens'. This cultivar also has a narrower crown. The leaf is remarkably scalloped and often twisted. Its narrow shape makes it eminently suitable as an avenue and street tree. This elm is specifically bred because it is completely resistant to Dutch elm disease. The name 'Columella' refers to a Roman Emperor who wrote a treatise on agriculture in the first century AD. The Emperor had (even at that time) a great deal of interest in the use of elms, including as cattle feed and in wine making.
Our trees can only be planted when they don't have any leaves. Due to the this we will start delivering again from November 2025.
