A Belgian selection with a good, vertical trunk and a broad, pyramidal crown. Height up to 20 m. The trunk is dark brown and grooved and the young twigs are green to reddish brown. The base of the leaf is heart-shaped and the top of the leaf tapers to an abrupt point. Compared to the species, 'Van Pelt' has larger leaves that are lighter green. The leaf stem is remarkably red. Pungent flowers appear in early summer, growing in short umbels and followed by fairly small fruit. 'Van Pelt' is fairly unsusceptible to aphids and anchors itself in the ground less well than does the species, making planting in open areas unadvisable. Winter hardiness zone: 4
