Rosaceae

Sorbus ×arnoldiana 'Schouten' Sorbus ×arnoldiana 'Schouten'

This tree forms a fairly dense ovoid crown that later becomes more rounded. The leaves are imparipinnate and consist of 9 - 17 (21) lanceolate leaflets. These are 5 - 7 cm long and 2 - 3 cm wide and have a finely serrated leaf edge. The autumn colour is orange-red. The large felt-like flower umbels consist of many white flowers. As early as August the orange-yellow fruits appear, diameter approx. 1 cm, and they remain on the tree until approx. mid-September. The tree produces less fruit than other cultivars. 'Schouten' prefers slightly acid humic soil but also flourishes on dry sandy soils. The tree was discovered around 1950 in a consignment of S. discolor seedlings. Later 'Schouten' turned out to belong to the S. x arnoldiana hybrid.
