Pterocarya stenoptera 'Fern Leaf' Pterocarya stenoptera 'Fern Leaf'

Juglandaceae

Pterocarya stenoptera 'Fern Leaf' Pterocarya stenoptera 'Fern Leaf'

Large tree with a broad ovoid crown. Initially the tree grows quite slenderly, but the heavy boughs broaden the crown significantly when mature and it eventually spreads to 12 to 15 m wide. The twigs and bark are like the species but the leaves are very different. They are imparipinnate with 13 - 23 leaf segments. Each leaf segment is very deeply dissected giving the leaf its characteristic fern-like appearance. It often remains (dried) in the tree for a long time into autumn and early winter. The blossom and fruit are like those of the species. Forms root suckers only when the tree is in a bad condition. Resistant to long-lasting flooding. Cannot tolerate sea wind. A striking tree thanks to its lovely leaf structure.
