'Kojou-no-mai' is a relatively slow-growing large shrub that eventually grows about 3 m tall and wide. The thin twigs have a distinct zigzag structure. The leaves are ovate with the typical long pointed tip that all P. incisa have. Autumn colours are beautiful orange to red. Flowers open from early March to early April, depending on temperature. The flower buds are pale red and the opened flowers are pale pink with a darker centre, which darkens as the flower ages. The fine plant structure is enhanced by the delicate blossom of 'Kojou-no-mai'.
'Kojou-no-mai' is fine for use in gardens, parks, cemeteries, etc. In summer it is an inconspicuous plant, but during flowering and also when the leaves are in autumn colour, the plant shows its full ornamental value.
Was found in the wild before 1985 by Japanese Shizuo Akaike, on the flanks of Mount Fuji. Hardiness zone 6b.
