Prunus avium 'Bigarreau Napoléon' Prunus avium 'Bigarreau Napoléon'

'Bigarreau Napoléon' is a sweet cherry with a semi-open crown of 6-8 m in height. The crown is broad ovoid and slightly irregular in shape. The tree blooms in April with white blossom. The tree is not self-pollinating, so another cherry variety is needed to guarantee that 'Bigarreau Napoléon' bears fruit. Preferably, 'Early Rivers' or 'Wine Cherry' is used for this, but 'Hedelfinger Riesenkirsche' or 'Schneider's Späte Knorpelkirsche' suffice. The cherries of 'Bigarreau Napoléon' are ready for picking from the end of July to around mid-August. They are orange-yellow with a red blush and spots. The longer the cherries hang in the tree, the more red they will turn. The flesh is yellow-white and tastes pleasantly sweet. In industry, cherries are mainly used for candying.
The exact origin of 'Bigarreau Napoléon' is not known, it is an old variety, which was already grown in Germany before 1785. Hardiness zone 6.
