A hybrid of P. laurifolia and P. nigra 'Italica' found in Berlin in 1865. Forms a broad columnar to ovoid crown with an eventual height of about 25 m. In its juvenile stage, the crown is quite narrow and dense. The trunk grows straight. The grey bark is roughly grooved. The ovoid to pointed leaves are glossy dark green with a grey-green underside. In some years, the leaves turn yellow in autumn. The tree flowers with male catkins. Moderately susceptible to leaf spot disease. Useful in windbreaks, urban areas and landscape plantings. Prefers moist, fertile soil, acidic to neutral. Good wind resistance. Hardiness zone: 3
