Rosaceae

Malus robusta 'Persicifolia' Malus robusta 'Persicifolia'

'Persicifolia' grows from a shrub form into a, usually multi-stemmed, small tree with a height of about 5 m. The crown is oval to broadly oval and semi-open. The leaves are narrow, 7-8 cm long and look somewhat like the leaves of a peach tree. In April, 'Persicifolia' flowers very profusely with single white flowers about 4 cm in size. The flower buds are pale pink, contrasting well with the flowers. Flowering is followed by fairly small (about 2 cm) ornamental apples. These are shiny red and very eye-catching and remain on the tree until February. Both the flowering and the fruits are striking, giving 'Persicifolia' double ornamental value.
Malus ×robusta 'Persicifolia' is a healthy ornamental apple. The tree is virtually soil tolerant, provided it is sufficiently permeable and sufficiently nutritious. Tolerates wind, but not sea wind. Can also be used in paving.
Malus ×robusta 'Persicifolia' is a natural hybrid, whose seed was collected by English planthunter William Purdom near Beijing. The tree was introduced by J. Veitch & Sons in 1910. Hardiness zone 5.
