Fagus sylvatica 'Black Swan' is a Dutch selection that remains relatively small. Forms a narrow, upright, weeping tree with a rising top and vigorously weeping branches. May attain an eventual height of circa 15 m and a spread of 3 - 4 m. The oval to ovate leaves are dark red-brown and 4 - 9 cm. 'Black Swan' has a larger leaf than 'Purple Fountain' and can be used as a solitary. The tree requires a calcareous soil that is moisture-retentive, but well-drained, rich in humus content and loamy. Winter hardiness zone: 5b
