Cornus nuttallii 'Portlemouth' Cornus nuttallii 'Portlemouth'

'Portlemouth' is a small to medium-sized tree with a pyramidal crown and a distinctly upright growth habit due to the continuous heart branch. 'Portlemouth' eventually grows 6-8 m tall. The young twigs are green and turn red-brown already in the first year. The old bark is reddish brown to grey. The leaves are slightly glossy and dark green. In autumn, the leaves turn various shades of red before falling off. Flowers appear over a long period from early summer to early autumn. Thanks to the broad, overlapping bractae (flower bracts), the flowers look very full. The bractae are clearly veined, a typical feature of this cultivar.
The tree roots shallowly. Is sufficiently hardy, but must be protected from cold easterly winds. Suitable for any fertile and permeable soil, preferably on sandy and loamy soils.
'Portlemouth' was found as a spontaneous seedling in a garden near Salcombe, Devon, UK. Hardiness zone 7
