Acer rubrum 'Somerset' Acer rubrum 'Somerset'

Acer rubrum 'Somerset' is a medium to large tree with a regular continuous heart branch. The crown is initially pyramidal, but later becomes broadly pyramidal to eventually become broadly oval. 'Somerset' has dense but regular branching. This cultivar arose from a cross between 'October Glory' and 'Autumn Flame'. It is a sister seedling to 'Brandywine' and was thus selected in the same cross programme -resistance to dwarf cicadas-. The summer foliage is dark green, but in autumn it turns a brilliant dark red.
The tree is male, which means that no seeds are formed, which also means there is no metastasis. On calcareous soils and excessively dry soils, growth will stagnate. Less good autumn colours will also be seen on these soils.
Applicable as a solitary tree in parks and gardens or as avenue tree in semi-paved areas, wide green spaces, etc. Due to its final width unsuitable for narrow profiles.
Our trees can only be planted when they don't have any leaves. Due to the this we will start delivering again from November 2025.
